Important Change from 23 March 2024: Australia replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement for all Subclass 500 Student Visa applications. Applications lodged before 23 March 2024 were still assessed under GTE. All new applications use the GS framework. This guide covers the updated GS requirement in full.

What Changed & Why It Matters

The Genuine Student (GS) Requirement — Explained

The GS requirement ensures that every student visa applicant is coming to Australia with the primary purpose of studying. Unlike the old GTE, GS also recognises that students may develop skills Australia needs and may later apply for permanent residence (PR).

Core Purpose
1

Primary Intention Must Be Study

Your visa application must clearly show that your main reason to enter Australia is to complete your enrolled course — not to work, migrate, or stay permanently at the time of application.

Research Required
2

Show Course & Provider Research

You must demonstrate a clear understanding of your chosen course, education provider, and life in Australia. Vague answers are flagged. Concrete research — costs, duration, career outcomes — is expected.

Career Alignment
3

Career Benefit Must Be Clear

Explain how the Australian qualification benefits your career in your home country or globally. Reference expected roles, salary improvements, and how the qualification is recognised internationally.

GCC Students
4

Ties to Home Country Matter

Family, employment, and financial ties to India or GCC countries are assessed. Strong community and economic ties show you have compelling reasons to return — which supports your GS case positively.

ImmiAccount
5

Answer GS Questions in ImmiAccount

GS questions are answered directly inside your ImmiAccount application (max 150 words each). These are not uploaded as a separate document — but you must attach supporting evidence files.

Under 18
6

Under 18? Parents' Intentions Assessed Too

For applicants under 18, the Department of Home Affairs will also consider the intentions of parents or legal guardians as part of the GS assessment process.

📋 The 4 GS Questions You Must Answer

All answered inside ImmiAccount — max 150 words each. Be specific. Support every answer with documents.

  • Q1
Current CircumstancesDescribe your current circumstances — including family, community, employment, and financial ties to your home country.
  • Q2
Why This Course & Provider in AustraliaExplain why you want to study this specific course with your chosen education provider in Australia. Show your research and understanding of the course and life in Australia.
  • Q3
Career & Future BenefitExplain how completing this course will benefit your career and future opportunities. Include expected roles, salary outcomes, and PR prospects if relevant.
  • Q4
Any Other Relevant InformationAdd any other information relevant to your application — study gaps, course changes, previous refusals, family situations, etc.
💡 Additional questions apply if you are lodging a new student visa while already in Australia, or if you previously held a student visa. Our counselors guide you through every scenario.

🧮 Calculate Your Exact Funds Requirement

Every student's funds requirement is different based on course fees, duration, and family members. Use our free calculator to get the exact figure for your application.

Example 1 Course AUD 50,000 over 3 years → First-year tuition = AUD 16,667 + living AUD 29,710 + travel AUD 2,000 = AUD 48,377 minimum
Example 2 — Short course (≤12 months) Course AUD 15,000 for 10 months, AUD 5,000 already paid → Show AUD 10,000 tuition + AUD 29,710 living (pro-rated) + travel
Example 3 — 18-month course AUD 20,000 over 18 months → (20,000 ÷ 18) × 12 = AUD 13,333 for first 12 months

Always attach receipts/CoE showing amounts paid and bank/loan evidence showing genuine access to funds.

Health Insurance

OSHC — Overseas Student Health Cover

OSHC is mandatory for the entire duration of your student visa. You cannot lodge a visa application without a valid OSHC certificate. Choosing the right provider affects your coverage and cost significantly.

Which OSHC Provider Is Right for You?

There are 5 approved OSHC providers in Australia. Coverage, pricing, hospital networks, and claim processes vary between them. Indian and GCC students should compare before purchasing — the cheapest plan is not always the best value for a 2–3 year stay.

Mandatory for Subclass 500
Must cover full visa duration. Policy number & dates required in your application.

Before You Lodge

Practical Tips for Indian & GCC Students

📁
Upload clear, colour scans and keep filenames tidy — e.g. NAME_Passport.pdf, NAME_CoE.pdf, NAME_BankStatement_Mar25.pdf. Case officers process thousands of applications.
🔏
Notarise or certify key documents when the case officer requests it. Documents from India should be apostilled if asked. GCC documents may need UAE/Qatar attestation.
📈
Show clear study and career logic — course progression, relevance to prior study or work, expected salary and role in Australia and back home after graduation.
⏸️
Explain study gaps and course or provider changes with supporting evidence. Unexiplained gaps are the #1 reason for GS red flags and additional questioning.
🇦🇪
GCC-based earners: Always include a salary certificate, stamped bank statements from your UAE/Qatar/Saudi bank, and your employment contract. NRE/NRO statements from India-side are also helpful.
⚠️
Always cross-check the official checklist inside your ImmiAccount and the Document Checklist Tool on the Home Affairs website before lodging. Requirements can change without notice.
