Student Visa Subclass 500

Key Visa Conditions โ€” Know Before You Go

Understanding your visa conditions is the most important part of studying in Australia. Breaching any condition can lead to visa cancellation. Here's what every Indian student must know:

โฐ

Work Limit โ€” 48 Hours Per Fortnight

You may work a maximum of 48 hours per fortnight (2 weeks) while your course is in session. During official university vacation periods, you may work unlimited hours. This limit applies to all work โ€” including casual, part-time, and self-employment.

๐Ÿ“š

Enrolment in CRICOS-Registered Courses

You must remain enrolled in your registered course throughout your visa. Any course change must be approved by your provider. Notify your university and education provider before switching courses or institutions.

โœ…

Satisfactory Course Progress & Attendance

You must maintain satisfactory academic progress โ€” typically 50% pass rate per study period. Most universities also require a minimum 80% attendance. Failing to meet these requirements may result in a notification to the Department of Home Affairs.

๐Ÿฅ

Valid OSHC โ€” Overseas Student Health Cover

You must maintain valid OSHC for the duration of your student visa. OSHC covers hospital and medical expenses in Australia. Major providers: Medibank, Allianz, NIB, AHM, and BUPA. Keep your OSHC active โ€” even during breaks.

๐Ÿ“

Notify Education Provider of Your Address

You must notify your Australian education provider of your residential address within 7 days of arrival in Australia. When you change address, you must update your provider within 7 days. This is a visa condition โ€” not just an administrative requirement.

๐Ÿ”„

Course Change โ€” GS Statement Required

If you wish to change courses or transfer to another university in your first 6 months, you need your current provider's written agreement or a Genuine Student (GS) statement. Guide to Heights can help prepare this documentation.

โš ๏ธ
Important: Breaching any visa condition can result in your student visa being cancelled and you being required to leave Australia. If you are unsure about any condition, contact Guide to Heights (QEAC #10439) for free advice before taking any action. Source: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au โ†—

"The pre-departure session is not just a checklist โ€” it's about giving every student the confidence to walk off that plane in Australia knowing exactly what to do, who to call, and how to thrive. Having lived and studied in Melbourne myself, I understand firsthand what students face in those first weeks โ€” and I built this session specifically to remove that uncertainty."

Frequently Asked Questions

The session is open to all Indian international students who have been accepted to an Australian university and are preparing to depart for Australia. It is completely free. Students from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and GCC countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman) regularly attend. Family members who want to understand what their child is heading into are also welcome.
Click any WhatsApp button on this page to join our community group at this link โ†—. Session dates for each intake (February, July, November) are announced in the group. No formal registration form is required โ€” just join the group and you'll receive the Google Meet link when the session is confirmed.
From 2023 onwards, the Australian Government restored the 48-hour per fortnight (2 weeks) work limit for Subclass 500 student visa holders. This applies during all study periods. During official university vacation periods or course breaks, you may work unlimited hours. This limit applies to all types of work โ€” including casual, part-time, and self-employment. Breaching the work limit is a visa condition breach that can result in visa cancellation.
Essential documents to carry in your hand luggage: valid passport with student visa grant email/letter, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), OSHC policy documents, travel insurance, certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts, bank statements, and any doctor's letters for prescribed medicines. Keep digital backups on Google Drive or email. The session covers the complete checklist in detail.
We conduct both formats. Online sessions are held on Google Meet and are accessible to students across India and the GCC โ€” our Feb 2025 session had 575+ students join online simultaneously. In-person sessions are held at our Kochi office (Level 2, Infopark Express Highway Junction, Kakkanad). Dates for both are announced on our WhatsApp community group.
Yes, absolutely. The pre-departure session is open to all Indian international students heading to Australia โ€” regardless of which agent or consultancy you used to apply. We believe every student deserves proper pre-departure guidance, and we offer it free as part of our commitment to the student community.
If you miss a session, you have two options: (1) Wait for the next session announcement in the WhatsApp group โ€” we hold sessions for each major intake throughout the year. (2) Book a private 1-on-1 pre-departure consultation with Abin Mathew Varghese via our Google Calendar booking โ†— at a time convenient for you.
Most major Australian banks allow international students to open a bank account before arriving: Commonwealth Bank, NAB, ANZ, and Westpac all have pre-arrival account opening options through their websites. You'll need your passport, student visa details, university enrollment proof, and an Australian address (your accommodation address works). The session covers this in detail, including which bank is most popular among Indian students and how to avoid fees.
OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is mandatory health insurance for all international students on a Subclass 500 student visa. It is required as a visa condition and must be maintained for the full duration of your visa. OSHC covers medically necessary treatment at hospitals and GP clinics in Australia. Major providers: Medibank, Allianz, NIB, AHM, and BUPA. Many universities arrange OSHC as part of your acceptance package.
Save these numbers before you arrive: Emergency (Police/Fire/Ambulance): 000. Non-emergency police: 131 444. Mental health & crisis support โ€” Lifeline: 13 11 14. Health advice (non-emergency): Healthdirect: 1800 022 222. Your university's emergency contact number (available on their website). Your OSHC provider's 24-hour helpline. The session dedicates an entire chapter to emergency preparedness.
