Everything Explained โ€” What Does OSHC Actually Cover?

Understanding Your OSHC Coverage

Most students don't fully understand what OSHC covers until they're sick in Australia. Read this before you buy.

Doctor and patient consultation โ€” OSHC covers GP visits
OSHC health insurance protection
๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

What is a Standard GP Consultation?

A GP (General Practitioner) is a regular doctor โ€” your first point of contact when you are sick in Australia. With OSHC, all providers cover 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee for a GP visit.

This means your visit to a bulk-billing GP is fully covered. If the doctor charges above the MBS rate (a "gap fee"), you may need to pay the difference. Most GPs near universities bulk-bill international students.

  • โœ“Visit for illness, injury, or a medical certificate
  • โœ“Prescriptions written by the GP are also claimable
  • โœ“Telehealth / online consultations โ€” covered by most providers
  • โœ“Specialist referrals covered at 85% MBS (100% with Bupa)
๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

What is Out of Hospital Treatment?

Out of hospital treatment refers to all medical services you receive outside of a hospital โ€” such as visiting a GP clinic, a specialist's private office, or getting blood tests or X-rays at a pathology lab.

All OSHC providers cover out-of-hospital treatment at 100% MBS for GPs and 85% MBS for specialists. Bupa covers specialists at 100% MBS โ€” making it the best option if you expect to need specialist care.

  • โœ“GP consultations (in-clinic and telehealth)
  • โœ“Specialist visits (cardiologist, dermatologist, etc.)
  • โœ“Blood tests, pathology, and X-rays
  • โœ“Ultrasounds and diagnostic imaging
๐Ÿ’Š

Prescription Medicines โ€” How It Works

When your GP prescribes a medicine, OSHC covers part of the cost โ€” but you must pay a co-payment first before the insurer contributes.

The co-payment is currently $31.60 for all providers except Medibank which is $30.00. After your co-payment, the insurer pays up to their maximum per-item limit (typically $50, or $70 with Medibank). You have an annual person limit of $500.

๐Ÿ’ก
Example: If your medicine costs $95, you pay $31.60 (co-pay) + whatever exceeds the insurer's $50 limit = you pay ~$45 total. The insurer pays $50.
๐Ÿฅ

What is MBS? โ€” Medicare Benefits Schedule

The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) is an official list set by the Australian Government that defines the standard fee for every medical service. OSHC providers pay a percentage of this MBS rate.

  • โœ“100% MBS = full government rate โ€” you pay nothing (at bulk-billing clinics)
  • โœ“85% MBS = you pay the 15% gap between the MBS rate and the insurer's contribution
  • โœ“GP visits: all providers pay 100% MBS
  • โœ“Specialist visits: 85% MBS for most, 100% for Bupa
  • โœ“Pathology and X-rays: 85% MBS for most, 100% for Bupa
Detailed Prescription Medicine Comparison

Prescription Medicines โ€” What Each Provider Pays

When claiming for a prescription medicine, you must pay a co-payment first before the insurer contributes. This table shows exactly what you pay and what the insurer pays for each provider.

Cost Breakdown nib ahm Allianz Medibank โ˜… Bupa
Your co-payment per item$31.60$31.60$31.60$30.00 โ˜…$31.60
Max insurer pays per item (after co-pay)$50$50$50$70 โ˜…$50
Annual limit per person$500$500$500$500$500
Annual family limit$1,000$1,000$1,000$1,000$1,000
๐Ÿ“Œ
Important: The PBS co-payment ($31.60) is a fixed government amount that you must pay regardless of which OSHC provider you choose โ€” this is not something OSHC covers. Medibank offers the best pharmacy deal โ€” paying up to $70 per item (vs $50 for others) and a lower co-payment of $30.00. If you take regular prescription medicines, Medibank may be the best choice despite a higher annual premium.
Critical for Nursing & Healthcare Students

Does OSHC Cover Vaccinations?

๐Ÿšจ
No. OSHC does NOT cover vaccinations. Vaccines required for your course โ€” including nursing, healthcare, childcare, aged care, and social work placements โ€” are NOT covered by any OSHC policy. You must pay for them yourself. However, many of these vaccines are significantly cheaper in India than in Australia โ€” get them before you leave.

Vaccines Required for Australian Study โ€” Pay in India First

These vaccines are commonly required by Australian universities for healthcare, nursing, childcare, and social work courses. Get them in India before departure โ€” typically 60โ€“80% cheaper.

    ๐Ÿ’‰
    Hepatitis B (3-dose series)
Mandatory for all nursing and healthcare programs. Must show immunity via blood test. Get all 3 doses in India well before departure.
    ๐Ÿ’‰
MMR โ€” Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 doses)
Required for most healthcare courses. Many Indian students have childhood records โ€” confirm immunity before going to Australia.
    ๐Ÿ’‰
    DTP โ€” Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
Whooping cough (pertussis) component particularly important for nursing and aged care placements.
    ๐Ÿ’‰
    Varicella (Chickenpox)
Blood test for immunity first. Many Indians have natural immunity. If not immune, 2-dose vaccine required.
    ๐Ÿ’‰
    Influenza (Annual Flu Shot)
Required annually for clinical placements. First dose can be taken in India; subsequent doses taken annually in Australia.
    ๐Ÿ’‰
COVID-19 Booster (if required by placement)
Some hospitals and aged care facilities require current COVID boosters for clinical placement. Check with your university.

๐Ÿ’ก Money-Saving Tip โ€” Get Vaccines in India

Vaccination costs in India are typically 60โ€“80% cheaper than in Australia. A full Hepatitis B series costs approximately โ‚น600โ€“โ‚น1,000 in India vs AUD 150โ€“200 in Australia.

  • โœ“Ask your university for the full vaccination requirement list before departure
  • โœ“Visit a travel health clinic in Kerala for advice
  • โœ“Keep all vaccination records in English โ€” you'll need to show them in Australia
  • โœ“Hepatitis B blood test (serology) is also required to prove immunity โ€” do this in India
  • โœ“Guide to Heights Pre-Departure Session covers vaccination planning in detail
Important to Know Before You Claim

Waiting Periods โ€” What They Mean

A waiting period is the time you must wait after your OSHC policy starts before you can claim for certain conditions. During this period you are still covered for acute (sudden) illnesses and emergencies โ€” but not for pre-existing or specific conditions listed below.

0 Months
Emergency & Acute Illness
All sudden illnesses, accidents, and emergency treatments are covered from day 1 of your policy โ€” no waiting period ever applies to emergencies.
2 Months
Pre-existing Psychiatric Conditions
Mental health conditions that existed before your policy started have a 2-month waiting period (except Allianz Care and Medibank which have 0 months, and Bupa which can waive it).
12 Months
Pre-existing Medical Conditions
Any condition you had before your policy started requires 12 months wait before hospital treatment for that condition is covered. This applies to all providers.
12 Months
Obstetrics / Pregnancy
Pregnancy-related hospital treatment is only covered after 12 months of continuous OSHC coverage with any provider. Plan ahead if you intend to have children in Australia.
0 Months
GP Visits & Routine Care
Standard GP consultations, telehealth visits, blood tests, and X-rays are covered from day 1 โ€” no waiting period applies to routine out-of-hospital care.
0 Months
Prescription Medicines
Prescription medicines from a GP can be claimed from day 1 of your policy, subject to your co-payment and annual limits.
โš ๏ธ
Mental health tip: If you know you may need mental health support when you arrive in Australia, choose Allianz Care or Medibank โ€” both have 0 months waiting period for pre-existing psychiatric conditions. Bupa can also waive the waiting period in some circumstances.
