Why Study in Ireland — and What is the "D" Study Visa?

Ireland is an English-speaking EU member state, home to globally ranked universities and the European headquarters of companies like Google, Meta, Pfizer, Intel and Apple. To study there for longer than 90 days, non-EEA students from India and the GCC apply for the Long Stay "D" Study Visa. You must be enrolled full-time in a course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) at NFQ Level 6 or above.

🎓
"D" Study Visa
For full-time courses lasting more than 90 days. Short courses under 90 days use the "C" study visa. Applied for online through AVATS.
💼
20 / 40 hrs
Work up to 20 hours per week in term time and 40 hours per week during the standardised holiday periods on Stamp 2.
🛫
Stay Back
The Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G) lets you stay 12 months (Level 8) or up to 24 months (Level 9+) to find graduate work.
⚠️
Tuition prepayment rule (from 30 June 2025): You must have paid a minimum of €6,000 in tuition fees (or the full fee if it is below €6,000) to your institution before ISD will grant your visa, and this must be confirmed in your acceptance letter. WhatsApp our QEAC certified team ↗ to plan your timeline.
📋
Proof of funds: For a one-year course you must show immediate access to at least €10,000 in living costs, on top of tuition. Degree students may use an approved €10,000 education bond instead of bank statements. See the official ISD study pages ↗ or ask your G2H counsellor.

Ireland "D" Study Visa Requirements

The 6 Core Requirements — What You Must Prove

Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) assesses whether you are a genuine student with the funds, English ability, and academic intent to succeed. Meeting all six requirements below is what determines approval or refusal.

1
ILEP Course

Full-Time Course on the ILEP

You must have an unconditional acceptance letter for a full-time course listed on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) at NFQ Level 6 or above, with at least 15 hours of study per week. Part-time and distance courses do not qualify.

2
€10,000

Proof of Funds — €10,000 Living Costs

For a one-year course you must show immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs, plus tuition for each year. For courses of 8 months or less, €833 per month up to €6,665. Degree students may use an approved €10,000 education bond.

3
€6,000

Minimum Tuition Prepayment

Since 30 June 2025, you must have paid at least €6,000 in tuition (or the full fee if lower) before ISD grants the visa. Your acceptance letter must confirm this, with an Electronic Transfer of Funds receipt to the college.

4
English

English Language Proficiency

Universities typically require IELTS 6.0–6.5 (many master's need 6.5), with TOEFL, PTE and often Duolingo accepted. For English language courses, the visa requires a basic level set out in the ISD English language requirements.

5
Insurance

Private Medical Insurance

Every non-EEA student must hold private medical insurance sourced in Ireland, covering accidents and hospital treatment for the full stay. You present it at registration and renew it each year. Travel insurance is not accepted.

6
Genuine Student

Genuine Intent & Home Ties

You must show genuine academic intent and reasons to return home after study — family, employment, financial and community ties in India or the GCC. A clear, specific Purpose of Study letter strongly supports your case.

📋 Your Purpose of Study Letter — What It Must Cover

Ireland does not force an SOP, but visa officers strongly prefer a clear Purpose of Study letter · Be specific to your course and university · Our counsellors help you draft it — free

  • Q1
Why Ireland & Why This Course Why you chose Ireland and this specific course and university — not a similar course in India or the UAE. Show your research: course modules, duration, NFQ level, fees, and career outcomes specific to the Irish qualification.
  • Q2
Academic & Career Background Your previous qualifications, any study or work gaps (clearly explained), and how this course builds logically on your background. Link your past → present → future in one clear narrative.
  • Q3
Financial Plan Who is funding you, how the €10,000 living costs and tuition are covered, and evidence that the funds are genuine and traceable over six months. Mention education loans or an education bond if used.
  • Q4
Future Plans & Home Ties Your intended career after graduating, and your ties to India or the GCC that show genuine reasons to return — family, property, employment prospects, and community roles.
💡 Refusal trigger to avoid: large, unexplained "funds parking" deposits in the weeks before printing your bank statements. Officers want funds that are real, liquid, and clearly sourced over a six-month history.

Work Rights — Official ISD Rules

How Many Hours Can You Work in Ireland as a Student?

Work rights depend on your immigration stamp. Students on Stamp 2 can work casually; students on Stamp 2A cannot work at all. You need a PPS number to work legally, and exceeding the limit is a breach of your permission.

Stamp 2 — Term Time
20 hrs

Per Week During Term

Non-EEA students with Stamp 2 permission may work up to 20 hours per week in casual employment while their course is in term time.

Stamp 2 — Holidays
40 hrs

Per Week During Holidays

Up to 40 hours per week during the two standardised holiday periods only: 1 June to 30 September and 15 December to 15 January. These dates are fixed for all non-EEA students.

Stamp 2A

No Work Permitted

Students on Stamp 2A permission (courses not on the ILEP) are not entitled to take up any part-time work or engage in business.

After Graduation — Stamp 1G

Full-Time (40 hrs)

On the Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G), you can work full-time up to 40 hours per week, but you cannot be self-employed or run a business.

💡
Tip: Popular part-time roles for students are in hospitality, retail, customer service and administration in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. You must have a PPS number and pay tax through the PAYE system. See the official work rules on Citizens Information ↗
Financial Requirements

How Much Money Do You Need to Study in Ireland?

You must show genuine access to funds without relying on public funds or casual work. Tuition for non-EU students typically ranges from €10,000 to €25,000 per year for most programmes (medicine and some specialised courses cost more). The living-cost figures below are the official ISD requirements.

📌
Education bond alternative: Degree-programme students can lodge an approved €10,000 education bond (for example via TransferMate) as an alternative to bank statements. The bond must be held continuously from your visa application until you register in Ireland, and is released to you on arrival.
Mandatory Health Cover

Private Medical Insurance for Ireland

Every non-EEA student in Ireland must hold private medical insurance for the full duration of their stay. It must be sourced from a recognised Irish provider and cover accidents and medical incidents including hospital stays. You present valid insurance when you register for your IRP, and renew it at each registration — travel insurance is not accepted.

Which Insurance Should You Choose?

Ireland has several recognised health insurers, plus student-specific plans designed to meet immigration requirements at an affordable price. Guide to Heights helps you compare options and arrange cover that satisfies ISD registration — completely free. Always confirm the policy covers hospital treatment for the full length of your permission before you fly.

Mandatory — No Exceptions

Required at IRP registration and every renewal. Must cover hospital treatment for the full stay. Travel insurance is not accepted.

Ireland offers one of Europe's clearest post-study pathways: from student, to graduate job-seeker, to employment permit holder, to long-term resident. With the right course and planning, you can build a clear route from your first day of study.

Stamp 2

Study in Ireland — Stamp 2 Student Permission

Complete your ILEP-listed course. Choose an NFQ Level 8 (honours bachelor's) or Level 9/10 (master's/PhD) qualification to qualify for the stay-back scheme. Note: time on Stamp 2 as a student is not reckonable towards citizenship, but it is your foundation for everything that follows.

2
Stamp 1G

Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G)

Apply within six months of your final results. Level 8 graduates get a non-renewable 12 months; Level 9 and above get up to 24 months (an initial 12 months plus a 12-month renewal on showing you are job-seeking). You can work full-time (up to 40 hrs/week) but cannot be self-employed. Official ISD scheme details ↗

3
Employment Permit

Critical Skills or General Employment Permit

Secure a graduate-level job and apply for an employment permit. The Critical Skills Employment Permit (for occupations on the Critical Skills list) needs a minimum salary of €40,904 from 1 March 2026, or €68,911 for other eligible roles — with no Labour Market Needs Test and immediate family reunification. DETE permit details ↗

4
Stamp 4

Stamp 4 — Work Without a Permit

Critical Skills Employment Permit holders can apply directly for Stamp 4 after two years, allowing you to work without an employment permit, change jobs freely, and set up a business. Stamp 4 is issued for two years and is renewable. Citizens Information ↗

5
Citizenship

Long-Term Residency & Citizenship

After five years of reckonable legal residence you can apply for Irish citizenship by naturalisation. Time on Stamp 1G, Stamp 1 (employment permit) and Stamp 4 counts as reckonable residence; time on Stamp 2 as a student does not. Irish citizenship gives you EU rights across the whole European Union.

Expert Advice from QEAC Certified Counsellors

Practical Tips for Indian & GCC Students

💰
Show a full six-month bank history — not a single-day balance. Avoid "funds parking": a large, unexplained lump sum deposited just before you apply is one of the most common reasons for refusal.
🧾
Pay your €6,000+ tuition first and make sure your acceptance letter clearly confirms the payment. Since 30 June 2025, ISD will not grant the visa without this confirmation.
Double-check your course is on the ILEP. An acceptance letter from an institution or course not on the list will lead to refusal — verify before you pay any fees.
📄
Ensure bank statements are on headed paper and notarised if printed online. Credit-card statements are never accepted as proof of funds.
🇦🇪
GCC residents: submit a salary certificate, stamped UAE/GCC bank statements, employment contract, and NRE/NRO India statements. Our Sharjah office handles GCC-specific documentation for UAE, Saudi, Qatar and Bahrain.
🏥
Arrange Irish private medical insurance before you fly, covering hospital treatment for your full stay. Travel insurance will not be accepted when you register for your IRP.
🎓
Planning to stay back? Choose Level 9 (master's) for up to 24 months on Stamp 1G versus 12 months for Level 8 — and apply within six months of your results.
⏱️
Book your GNIB/ISD registration and IRP appointment as soon as you arrive — Dublin slots fill fast. Always carry your IRP card once issued.

Common Questions — Study in Ireland

The Long Stay "D" study visa lets non-EEA students, including Indian and GCC students, come to Ireland for full-time study lasting more than 90 days. Courses under 90 days use a short-stay "C" study visa instead. You must be enrolled in a full-time course on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) at NFQ Level 6 or above, with at least 15 hours of study per week, and apply online through the AVATS portal.
For a course of one academic year you must show immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs, in addition to your tuition fees. For courses of 8 months or less you must show €833 per month, up to €6,665 in total. Degree students may use an approved €10,000 education bond instead of bank statements. Funds must be genuine and traceable over a six-month history — education loans from approved banks are also accepted.
Yes. Since 30 June 2025, you must have paid a minimum of €6,000 in tuition (or the full fee if it is below €6,000) to your institution before Immigration Service Delivery will grant the visa. This payment must be clearly confirmed in your university acceptance letter, along with an Electronic Transfer of Funds receipt to the college's account.
The Irish government visa fee is €60 for a single-entry visa or €100 for a multiple-entry visa, applied for through AVATS. After arrival, you pay €300 to register and receive your Irish Residence Permit (IRP). Guide to Heights charges zero consultancy, application or service fees — our complete service is free. Learn about our free service model ↗
Students with Stamp 2 permission can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during the two standardised holiday periods: 1 June to 30 September and 15 December to 15 January. Students with Stamp 2A permission cannot work. You need a PPS number to work legally and must not exceed these limits, as it is a condition of your permission.
Ireland's stay-back visa is the Third Level Graduate Programme (Stamp 1G). Graduates with an NFQ Level 8 honours bachelor's degree receive a non-renewable 12-month permission. Graduates with a Level 9 or above award (master's or PhD) receive up to 24 months — an initial 12 months plus a 12-month renewal. You must apply within six months of receiving your final results while holding a valid Stamp 2 and IRP, and can work full-time during this period. Official ISD details ↗
English requirements are set by each university and course, but most Irish universities ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with many taught master's programmes requiring 6.5. Equivalent TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and, at many institutions, Duolingo scores are also accepted. For English language courses, the visa requires a basic level of English. Always confirm the exact score with your chosen university — and our IELTS & PTE classes ↗ can help you reach it.
Yes. Every non-EEA student must have private medical insurance that covers accidents and medical incidents, including hospital stays, for the full duration of their stay. It must be sourced from a recognised Irish provider — travel insurance is not sufficient. You present valid insurance when you register for your IRP and renew it each year. Yes. Guide to Heights serves students from Kerala, all of India, and GCC countries including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, with offices in Kochi and Sharjah. Our service is completely free for all students.
After graduating you move from Stamp 2 to Stamp 1G under the Third Level Graduate Programme to seek graduate-level work. You then secure a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit. Critical Skills permit holders can apply directly for Stamp 4 after two years, removing the need for an employment permit. After five years of reckonable legal residence you can apply for citizenship by naturalisation — time on Stamp 2 as a student is not reckonable, but Stamp 1G and Stamp 4 are. DETE permit info ↗
Yes. Non-EEA students must enrol in a full-time course listed on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) at NFQ Level 6 or above. If your course or institution is not on the ILEP, your student visa will be refused. Part-time and distance-learning courses do not qualify for a student visa.
Generally non-EEA students cannot bring family members on the basis of their student status. From 2026, only postgraduate students at NFQ Level 9 or above (master's and doctoral programmes) are generally permitted to sponsor a spouse or dependent children. Undergraduate and short-course students usually cannot bring dependants under current rules.
The flagship award is the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES), administered by the Higher Education Authority, offering around 60 awards of a €10,000 stipend plus a full tuition fee waiver for one year of master's or PhD study to non-EU/EEA/UK/Swiss students. Universities such as UCD, Trinity, UCC, DCU and UL also offer merit scholarships and fee reductions, and the Irish Research Council funds research students. See our scholarships guide ↗
