Quick answer

Can you bring family on Australian student visa applications in 2026–27? For most new applicants, no.

  • From 2 October 2026, most Student visa (subclass 500) applicants cannot include a partner or dependent children.
  • Exemptions cover doctoral (PhD) students, Defence or DFAT-sponsored students, students fully funded by a foreign government, and eligible Pacific and ASEAN passport holders.
  • Family members cannot be added after the visa is granted. There are no exemptions to this rule.
  • Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 are assessed under the old rules, including any named family.
  • India is not in the ASEAN or Pacific groups, so most Indian students are not covered by those exemptions.

Can you bring family on Australian student visa applications? The short answer

Most new Student visa applicants can no longer include a partner or dependent children. Australia changed this rule on 2 October 2026 as part of a wider package to stop misuse of the Student visa.

A small group is still allowed to bring family. Most Indian students applying for a bachelor's or master's degree are not in that group. So if you plan to bring family on Australian student visa terms, check your exact situation before you pay any deposit.

What changed on 2 October 2026 if you want to bring family on Australian student visa?

Two family rules changed at the same time. One is about applying. The other is about adding people later.

Who counts as family when you bring family on Australian student visa?

For a Student visa, "family" has a narrow meaning. It includes:

  • Your spouse or de facto partner
  • Your unmarried dependent child under 18

Parents and siblings are not included. So even before the new rules, you could not bring them as family members on a Student visa.

Who can still bring family on Australian student visa applications?

The exemptions are limited. They apply to the main applicant, not to the family member.

Your situationCan you include family?
Indian student, new bachelor's or master's applicationNo
Doctoral (PhD) studentYes, eligible family may be included
Sponsored by Australia's Defence or DFATYes
Fully funded by a foreign government scholarshipYes, eligible family may be included
Passport from an eligible ASEAN or Pacific countryYes
Application already lodged before 2 October 2026Old rules apply, including named family

Where family can be included, the main applicant and the family member generally need to be in the same location when the application is lodged. Check the latest detail on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Safety tip: Do not choose a PhD or a scholarship just to bring family. Your course must match your real goals. A weak or unrealistic study plan can lead to a refusal.

Can you bring family on Australian student visa after it is granted?

No. Current Student visa holders can no longer add a partner or child as a subsequent entrant after the visa is granted. Home Affairs states there are no exemptions to this rule.

That means your decision about family needs to be made before you lodge. You cannot land in Australia and sort it out later.

What if you applied before 2 October 2026?

If you want to bring family on Australian student visa terms and applied earlier, note this: applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue under the rules that applied on the day you lodged. That includes applications that already name family members.

If you are already a Student visa holder with family on your visa, your current visa stays in force. Further applications may be possible in specified circumstances, so speak to a registered migration agent before you act.

5 options if you cannot bring family on Australian student visa terms

If your family cannot join you, you still have choices. Here are five practical ones.

1

Plan the first year apart

Many students begin alone, settle in, and visit home during semester breaks. Decide early how you will stay connected, and who will support your spouse or children at home.

Practical example: A student from Kochi plans one trip home during the mid-year break. He saves the flight cost in his budget from day one, so the visit does not strain his finances.
2

Check if a doctoral or funded pathway genuinely fits

If you already have a research background and a real interest in a PhD, this pathway allows eligible family to be included. It is only a good idea if the course truly matches your career plan.

3

Use visits, not relocation

Family members may be able to visit Australia for short stays on a visitor visa, if they meet the requirements. A visit is not a way to live in Australia for years. Check eligibility and conditions on the official Home Affairs website.

Safety tip: Be careful of any agent who promises a "family loophole" or a way to add family later. Such promises can lead to refusals and lost money.
4

Compare other countries' dependant rules

Each study destination has its own family rules, and they change often. If keeping your family together is your top priority, compare countries before you commit to Australia.

5

Choose the right intake and get proper advice

If you are unsure, it is better to wait one intake than to lodge the wrong application. A registered migration agent can review your personal case. Our counsellors can help you plan the course, university and timeline.

How the rule to bring family on Australian student visa changes your budget

If you cannot bring family on Australian student visa terms, your yearly costs are lower. You do not need extra rent for a bigger home or school costs for children. You do need to plan for flights home, regular calls and support for family back in India.

The Student visa application charge is currently AUD 2,500 for the main applicant. Build the full picture with our study abroad cost calculator guide, and add a cushion for exchange-rate moves.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my wife and children on an Australian student visa in 2026?

For most new applicants, no. From 2 October 2026, Student visa applicants generally cannot include a partner or dependent children unless an exemption applies. Exemptions cover doctoral students, Defence or DFAT-sponsored students, fully funded foreign government scholars, and eligible ASEAN and Pacific passport holders.

Can I bring family on Australian student visa terms if I am a master's student from India?

Generally no. A master's student from India is not in the exempt groups, and India is not in the ASEAN or Pacific lists. Check the latest Home Affairs guidance before you apply, because your own situation may differ.

Can my spouse join me later after my student visa is granted?

No. From 2 October 2026, current Student visa holders cannot add family members as subsequent entrants after the visa is granted. Home Affairs states that there are no exemptions to this rule, so family must be considered before you lodge.

I applied before 2 October 2026 with my family. Does the new rule affect me?

No. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged, including applications that already name family members. Confirm your exact lodgement date and speak to a registered migration agent about next steps.

Who counts as family if I bring family on Australian student visa?

A spouse or de facto partner, and an unmarried dependent child under 18. Parents and siblings are not counted as family members for a Student visa. This definition is narrower than many families expect, so check it early.

Can PhD students bring family on Australian student visa applications?
