Genuine Student Requirement โ€” From 23 March 2024

The GS Requirement โ€” What It Is and What You Must Prove

The GS requirement replaced the old GTE. It confirms that your primary purpose for coming to Australia is to study. It is more straightforward than GTE โ€” but requires concrete evidence, not generic statements. Four questions are answered directly in ImmiAccount (max 150 words each).

1
Core Purpose

Primary Intention Must Be Study

Your visa application must clearly show that your main reason to enter Australia is to complete your enrolled course. Work, migration, or permanent stay at time of application are secondary considerations.

2
Research Required

Demonstrate Course & Provider Research

Show a clear understanding of your course structure, costs, duration, AQF level, and provider reputation. Vague answers are flagged. Specific research evidence โ€” provider website, course outline, career outcomes โ€” is expected.

3
Career Alignment

Career Benefit Must Be Clearly Explained

Explain how the Australian qualification improves your career prospects. Reference expected roles, salary improvements, and how the qualification is recognised internationally or in your home country.

4
India & GCC

Ties to Home Country Are Assessed

Family ties, employment history, financial connections, and community roles in India or GCC countries show you have genuine reasons to return after study. Strong ties positively support your GS case.

5
ImmiAccount

Answered Online โ€” Not a Separate Document

GS questions are completed inside ImmiAccount (max 150 words each). They are not a standalone uploaded document. Supporting evidence files must be attached to your application separately.

6
Under 18

Parents' Intentions Also Considered

For students under 18, the Department also assesses the intentions of parents or legal guardians. Welfare arrangements must be in place for the full duration of stay or until the student turns 18.

๐Ÿ“‹ The 4 GS Questions You Answer in ImmiAccount

Max 150 words each. Be specific. Attach evidence for every answer. Our counsellors help you draft strong answers โ€” free.

  • Q1
Current CircumstancesYour family, community, employment, and financial ties to your home country. Kerala students: mention family property, current job, community roles. UAE/GCC residents: employment contract, business interests, dependants in India.
  • Q2
Why This Course & Provider in AustraliaWhy this specific course with this specific provider in Australia โ€” not a similar course in India or UAE. Show your research: course structure, fees, duration, AQF level, and career outcomes specific to Australian qualification.
  • Q3
Career & Future BenefitHow this qualification directly improves your career. Include expected job roles, salary range in Australia and back in India/GCC, PR prospects if relevant, and ANZSCO occupational codes if applying for skilled migration pathways.
  • Q4
Any Other Relevant InformationStudy gaps, course or provider changes, previous visa applications or refusals, family circumstances in Australia, or any special situations that explain your application timeline or decisions.
๐Ÿ’ก Extra question: If you are lodging from inside Australia on a non-student visa, or if you have previously held a student visa, an additional fifth question applies. Guide to Heights helps you navigate every scenario.

Work Rights โ€” Official Home Affairs Rules

How Many Hours Can You Work on an Australia Student Visa?

Post-Study & PR Pathway

What Happens After You Graduate? Your PR Pathway.

Subclass 500

Study in Australia โ€” Subclass 500 Student Visa

Complete your CRICOS-registered qualification (2โ€“4 years for most degrees). Choose a course in a skilled occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) for the strongest PR pathway. During study, aim for IELTS 8.0+ or PTE 79+ for 20 additional points, and consider NAATI CCL for 5 bonus points.

2
Post-Graduation

Apply for Subclass 485 โ€” Temporary Graduate Visa

After completing your Australian degree, apply for the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa โ†—. This provides 2โ€“5 years of post-study work rights depending on your course and location. Regional graduates and some occupations get longer stay periods. Guide to Heights provides free 485 visa guidance.

3
Build Your Points

Gain Work Experience & Improve Your Points

During your 485 visa, accumulate work experience in your occupation (adds 5โ€“10 points), maintain or improve English scores, complete a Professional Year if in IT, Accounting, or Engineering (5 bonus points), and build a credentialled resume. Use Guide to Heights' free PR points calculator โ†— to track your score.

4
Skilled Migration

Lodge EOI โ€” Skilled Migration (189, 190 or 491)

Subclass 491 (regional) adds 15 points โ€” more accessible. Our QEAC team provides free EOI strategy and occupation assessment guidance.

5
Permanent Residency

Permanent Resident โ€” Subclass 189, 190 or 191

Subclass 189 and 190 grant immediate permanent residency. Subclass 491 converts to permanent PR via Subclass 191 after 3 years of living and working in a regional area. Once you have PR, you can apply for Australian citizenship after 4 years of permanent residence (1 year as a permanent resident continuously).

Expert Advice from QEAC Certified Counsellors

Practical Tips for Indian & GCC Students

๐Ÿ“
Name your files clearly: NAME_Passport.pdf, NAME_CoE.pdf, NAME_BankStatement.pdf. Organised documents process faster and create a strong impression with case officers reviewing thousands of applications.
๐Ÿ“ˆ
Connect the study dots explicitly: your previous qualification โ†’ the gap โ†’ why this Australian course โ†’ what career it leads to. Officers will not infer it. Spell out the logical career progression in your GS statement.
โธ๏ธ
Always explain study gaps. Unexplained gaps between qualification and current application are the #1 reason GS statements are flagged. Even a gap of 1โ€“2 years needs a clear explanation with supporting evidence.
๐Ÿ’ฐ
Provide 3โ€“6 months of bank transaction history โ€” not just a balance. Explain source of large deposits. Banks treat a single-day certificate as insufficient. The Department wants to see how funds were accumulated over time.
๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช
GCC residents: Submit salary certificate, stamped UAE/GCC bank statements, employment contract, and NRE/NRO India statements. Our Sharjah office handles GCC-specific document requirements with specialist knowledge of UAE, Saudi, Qatar, and Bahrain documentation formats.
๐Ÿ’‰
Nursing and healthcare students: Get Hepatitis B, MMR, DTP, Varicella, and flu vaccines in India before departing. These are NOT covered by OSHC and are significantly cheaper in India (60โ€“80% less than in Australia). Our Pre-Departure Session covers vaccination planning in detail.
๐Ÿฅ
Your OSHC must start the day you arrive in Australia โ€” not the day your course starts. Do not fly before your OSHC policy begins. If your university arranged OSHC via CoE, check the exact start date carefully.
โš ๏ธ
Use the GTH Document Checklist Tool โ†— first, then always verify with the official Home Affairs tool โ†— just before lodging. The official tool was last updated 20 November 2024 and is refreshed twice yearly.
Common Questions โ€” AIO & Google AI Overview Optimised

Frequently Asked Questions โ€” Australia Student Visa Subclass 500

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) from 23 March 2024. It requires all Subclass 500 applicants to demonstrate their primary intention for coming to Australia is to study. Four questions (max 150 words each) are answered inside ImmiAccount. A fifth question applies if you are applying from inside Australia on a non-student visa, or if you have previously held a student visa. Supporting evidence must be attached for each answer. Guide to Heights provides free GS statement guidance for all students.
The Australian government charges from AUD 2,000 for the main applicant (unless exempt). There is an additional charge for each family member. Guide to Heights charges absolutely zero consultancy, application, or service fees for students planning to study in Australia. The only cost you ever pay is the AUD 2,000 government visa charge paid directly to the Department of Home Affairs. Learn more about our free service model โ†—
The Subclass 500 allows you to stay for up to 6 years, in line with your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Primary school students starting in Years 1โ€“4 are generally granted a maximum of 3 years. The exact period depends on your course type and duration. You cannot extend this visa โ€” to continue studying you must apply for a new student visa. If your visa expires before graduation, you may be eligible for a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) with a letter from your education provider.
Standard student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (two-week period) while their course is in session. During official course break periods, you can work unlimited hours. Students studying a Masters by Research or Doctoral degree, and their family members, have no work limit at any time. Students studying Masters by Coursework: their family members can also work unlimited hours, but the student remains capped at 48 hours per fortnight while the course is running. You and your family cannot work at all before your course begins.
From 7 August 2025, the minimum IELTS score is 6.0 for most standard courses (5.5 with 10+ weeks ELICOS, 5.0 with 20+ weeks ELICOS). PTE Academic minimum is 47. TOEFL iBT minimum is 67. At-home or remote-proctored versions (IELTS Online, TOEFL Home Edition, OET@Home) are not accepted. You are exempt from English tests if you hold a passport from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or Republic of Ireland, or are enrolled in certain postgraduate research or school courses.
You need to demonstrate: first year tuition fees (as per CoE), AUD 29,710 per year for student living costs, AUD 2,000 travel costs, and OSHC health insurance. For a single student with AUD 30,000 tuition, the typical total is AUD 62,000โ€“70,000. You must show genuine access to these funds through 3โ€“6 months of bank transaction history or an education loan sanction letter from an approved Indian bank โ†—. Use our free funds calculator โ†— for your exact figure.
Yes, OSHC is mandatory for the full duration of your visa. It must start from the day you arrive in Australia โ€” not the day your course starts. Without OSHC details in your application, your visa will be refused. OSHC covers GP visits (100% MBS), hospital treatment, ambulance services, and limited prescription medicines. It does not cover dental, optical, vaccinations required for your course, physiotherapy, or most preventive care. Exceptions: Norwegian (National Insurance Scheme), Swedish (Kammarkollegiet), and Belgian (Reciprocal Health Care Agreement) students are exempt. Compare all 5 providers โ†—
Yes. Guide to Heights specifically serves students from Kerala, all of India, and GCC countries including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. Our office in Kochi, Kerala and Sharjah, UAE are equipped to handle applications from both regions. GCC-based students need additional financial documents: salary certificate, stamped UAE/GCC bank statements, employment contract, and NRE/NRO India account statements. Our service is completely free for all students regardless of location.
After completing an Australian degree, you can apply for a Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa providing 2โ€“5 years of post-study work rights. During this time, gain work experience, achieve IELTS 8.0+ or PTE 79+ (adds 20 points), complete a Professional Year if eligible (5 points), and lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect for Subclass 189 (independent), 190 (state-nominated, +5 points), or 491 (regional, +15 points). Most competitive EOI rounds for 189 require 85โ€“100+ points. See our PR Points guide โ†— and 485 visa guide โ†—.
Processing times vary significantly based on your country of passport, Evidence Level, time of year, and application completeness. Applications lodged from 14 November 2025 are processed under Ministerial Direction 115. Peak periods (Februaryโ€“March and Juneโ€“July) take considerably longer. We always recommend lodging at least 3โ€“4 months before your course start date. See our current processing time guide โ†— for estimates updated by our QEAC team.
In the first 6 months of your principal course, you generally need written agreement from your current education provider to transfer to another. After 6 months, you can transfer more freely but must obtain a new CoE and attach it to your ImmiAccount. Some visa conditions (such as Condition 8208 for critical technology courses) require the Department's permission before changing. Always notify Guide to Heights before making any course change โ€” incorrect handling can affect your visa status.
No. OSHC does not cover vaccinations required for your course โ€” including Hepatitis B, MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella), DTP (Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis), Varicella (Chickenpox), and annual flu shots required for nursing, healthcare, childcare, and social work clinical placements. You must pay for these yourself. Getting vaccinations in India before departure is 60โ€“80% cheaper than paying in Australia. Our free Pre-Departure Session โ†— covers vaccination planning in detail.
Yes. You can include your partner (spouse or de facto) and dependent children (unmarried, under 18) in your application. You must declare ALL family members in your application โ€” even if they don't plan to travel with you. If not declared, they cannot apply for a student visa to join you later. Children who turn 18 before your visa is finalised must apply for their own visa separately. Each family member requires OSHC coverage and must meet health and character requirements.
The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa is for international students who have completed an Australian degree. It provides 2โ€“5 years of post-study work rights. Duration depends on your qualification type, study location (regional areas get longer stays), and occupation. You must apply within 6 months of receiving your final results. Guide to Heights provides free 485 visa guidance โ€” see our complete Subclass 485 Stay Back Visa guide โ†— for eligibility, duration, and work rights.
If your student visa is refused, the Department will notify you in writing with reasons and whether a review right exists. Most refusals can be reviewed by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). Do not panic โ€” contact Guide to Heights immediately. We review refusal reasons, advise on review prospects, help you strengthen your case, and assist with re-application or tribunal representation. Our service is free at the initial assessment stage. WhatsApp us at +91 73065 83820 immediately if you receive a refusal.
