Quick Course Facts
Course Overview
What is the Bachelor of Nursing in Australia?
The Bachelor of Nursing is a 3-year undergraduate degree that qualifies you to practise as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Australia. All accredited programs are approved by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and lead directly to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) via AHPRA — the same registration that allows you to work in any Australian hospital, clinic, or aged care facility.
Australia is currently facing a workforce shortfall projected to exceed 100,000 nurses by 2030, which makes nursing one of the most in-demand and PR-friendly courses for international students from Kerala and the GCC. With over 45,000 international nursing students currently enrolled across Australia, the country has built a structured, world-class system to train and retain overseas nurses.
3-Year Degree

Real hospital placements from Year 1, supervised by RNs

100K+ Nurse Shortage
One of Australia's most acute workforce gaps — strong job security
Why Australia for Nursing?
Why Nursing in Australia Beats Every Other Destination
Indian and GCC families often weigh nursing in Australia against the UK, Canada, Ireland, or New Zealand. Here is the honest, side-by-side comparison — and why Australia consistently delivers the strongest return on investment for international nursing students.
| Factor | 🇦🇺 Australia | 🇬🇧 UK | 🇨🇦 Canada | 🇮🇪 Ireland |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course Duration | 3 years (BN) | 3 years (BN) | 4 years (BScN) | 4 years (BSc) |
| Annual Tuition | AUD $32K–$46K (₹17–25 lakh) | £15K–£24K (₹15–25 lakh) | CAD $25K–$40K (₹15–24 lakh) | €16K–€25K (₹14–22 lakh) |
| Graduate Salary | AUD $70K–$95K (₹38–52 lakh) | £28K–£35K (₹29–37 lakh) | CAD $65K–$80K (₹39–48 lakh) | €35K–€45K (₹31–40 lakh) |
| Post-Study Work Visa | 2–4 years (485) | 2 years (Graduate Route) | Up to 3 years (PGWP) | 2 years (Stamp 1G) |
| PR Pathway | Direct via MLTSSL — 189/190/491 | Skilled Worker visa via job sponsorship | Express Entry (PNP nominations) | Critical Skills Permit then PR |
| Work During Study | 48 hrs/fortnight + unlimited in breaks | 20 hrs/week | 24 hrs/week | 20 hrs/week (40 in summer) |
| Workforce Shortage | 100,000+ by 2030 (priority) | ~40,000 NHS vacancies | ~60,000 nationwide | ~5,000 vacancies |
| Hourly Wage (Casual / Bank) | AUD $35–$50 / hour | £14–£22 / hour | CAD $30–$42 / hour | €18–€25 / hour |
| PR Timeline (from start of course) | ~5–6 years | ~6–8 years (sponsorship dependent) | ~6–7 years | ~7–8 years |
The Value-for-Money Verdict
An Indian student investing roughly ₹50–75 lakh in a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing in Australia typically recovers the full investment within 18–24 months of starting work as an RN. Add in 2–4 years of post-study work rights at full Australian salaries, and a clear PR pathway through MLTSSL, and the long-term ROI is among the strongest in any field of international study today.
Compared to nursing in the UK (lower salaries, sponsorship-dependent PR), Canada (longer 4-year degree, slower Express Entry), or Ireland (smaller workforce demand), Australia offers a uniquely balanced combination of: short course duration, the highest nursing salaries in the world, the most flexible part-time work hours during study, and the most direct PR route through a permanently MLTSSL-listed profession.
- ✓ Highest hourly wages for student work — AUD $35–$50/hour as a casual nurse or healthcare assistant
- ✓ Flexibility: 48 hrs/fortnight cap is the most generous student work allowance globally
- ✓ Direct PR: Apply for 189/190/491 visas without needing employer sponsorship — unlike the UK
- ✓ Family quality of life: Bring spouse with full work rights + children get free public schooling on a 500 visa for some states

Background Doesn't Match? You Still Have a Pathway
Can a Commerce or Non-Science Student Study Nursing in Australia?
This is one of the most common questions we hear at G2H — and the honest answer is: yes, but with conditions. Many Australian universities (including RMIT, ACU, Charles Sturt, Victoria University and University of Newcastle) do not require Biology, Chemistry, or Physics as a strict prerequisite for the Bachelor of Nursing. They list these subjects as "recommended" but accept students from any Year 12 stream — including Commerce, Humanities, and Arts — provided English requirements are met.
Other universities such as UQ, JCU and Adelaide do prefer at least one science subject. For students from Commerce or non-science backgrounds, G2H builds a customised pathway — usually through a Foundation Year, a Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse) with credit transfer into Year 2 of the BN, or direct entry to a university that accepts your stream.
Commerce Students Can Become Australian Nurses — With G2H
We have successfully placed students from Commerce, Humanities, Arts, and even non-traditional backgrounds into Bachelor of Nursing programs in Australia. The route depends on your Year 12 marks, English score, and target university — and we map it out for you in a single free consultation.
- Direct entry to universities that don't require science subjects
- Foundation / Pre-Nursing pathway with guaranteed BN progression
- Diploma of Nursing → credit transfer to Year 2 of BN
- IELTS / PTE 7.0 each band coaching support
- Conditional offer letters to support your Visa application
- SOP and GTE guidance for non-traditional profiles
Don't assume you can't.

Admission Criteria
Entry Requirements for International Students

| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Qualification | Completed Year 12 (or equivalent) with 65–75% aggregate. Selection rank typically 70–85. | Required |
| Subject Prerequisites | English mandatory. Biology / Chemistry preferred at most universities. RMIT, ACU, Charles Sturt, VU, Newcastle accept any stream including Commerce. | Varies |
| IELTS Academic | Overall 7.0 with minimum 7.0 in each band (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) — set by NMBA, non-negotiable for AHPRA registration. | NMBA Standard |
| PTE Academic | Overall 65 with minimum 65 in each communicative skill. | Alternative |
| OET (Nursing) | Grade B in each sub-test. Especially useful for OBA/IRON pathway candidates. | Alternative |
| Vaccinations & Police Check | Mandatory before clinical placements — all standard vaccines, Hepatitis B, annual flu, plus Working with Children Check. | Pre-Placement |
| Age | No age limit for course. Must be 18 by start of clinical placements (Year 1). Under 35 for 485 visa. | Note |
Need IELTS 7.0 Each Band? We've Got You.
The 7.0-each-band rule is the single biggest reason nursing applications get delayed. G2H's English Academy runs targeted IELTS and PTE coaching specifically calibrated to the nursing/AHPRA standard — plus discounted PTE exam vouchers.

Real-World Experience
Placements, Part-Time Work & Jobs After Graduation
One of the biggest reasons families choose nursing in Australia: every part of the journey — from Year 1 placements to part-time work to the first RN job — is built into the system. You earn while you learn, and you walk into a job offer at graduation.
Clinical Placements (800–1,000 hrs)
Every accredited program builds in 800–1,000 hours of supervised clinical placements across the 3 years — at major hospitals, aged care facilities, community clinics, and mental health units. You start placements from Year 1 — not just at the end. Travel, accommodation, and supervisor support is coordinated by the university.
Work As Nurse During Study (Part-Time)
On a Subclass 500 student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during semester and unlimited hours during semester breaks. Most nursing students take Assistant in Nursing (AIN) or Personal Care Assistant roles in aged care or hospitals — paying AUD $30–$45 per hour. You're earning real nursing-context experience that strengthens your final job applications.
Job Outcomes (90%+ in 6 months)
Australian nursing graduates achieve some of the highest employment rates of any profession — over 90% of graduates have a graduate RN position within 6 months of registration. Many are offered Graduate Nurse Programs (GNPs) at the same hospitals where they did their final-year placements. Job security is essentially guaranteed in regional areas.
Earnings & Career Growth
Registered Nurse Salary in Australia
Nursing in Australia is one of the highest-paying healthcare entry-level careers globally. Registered Nurses are covered by enterprise agreements that mandate annual salary increases, penalty rates for shifts and weekends, and overtime — meaning real take-home pay regularly exceeds the base figures below.
Salary data based on Jobs and Skills Australia 2026 occupational projections and enterprise agreements across NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, and SA public hospital systems. Regional and remote nursing roles often include additional location loadings of 10–25%.
Post-Study Work Rights
How Many Years Can You Stay in Australia After the Course?
The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa is your gateway to post-study work and PR. Bachelor of Nursing graduates receive 2 years on the Post-Higher Education Work stream — and significantly more if you study in regional Australia.
Standard 485 visa for Bachelor of Nursing graduates from metro university campuses. Two full years of unrestricted work rights — usually enough to secure RN job, complete skills assessment, and lodge PR application.
Additional 1-year extension on the 485 visa for graduates who study and live in these designated regional cities — extending your runway to skilled migration significantly.
Maximum extension of up to 2 additional years for true regional study locations. Combined with the 491 regional PR visa, this is the strongest pathway from student visa to permanent residency.
Full PR Pathway for Nursing Graduates
Registered Nurse occupations are listed on Australia's Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) under multiple ANZSCO codes (254418 Medical, 254421 Medical Practice, 254422 Mental Health, 254423 Perioperative, 254424 Surgical, 254425 Paediatrics, 254499 Not Elsewhere Classified). This makes nursing one of the most flexibly migration-friendly degrees in Australia.

Tuition for the 3-year Bachelor of Nursing in Australia ranges from AUD $32,000 to AUD $50,000 per year for international students in 2026, depending on the university. Regional universities like Charles Sturt, Federation, Southern Cross and UniSC are the most affordable (AUD $32,000–$33,500/year). Metro universities like Sydney, Monash, UTS and Melbourne are the highest (AUD $45,000–$50,000+/year).
Living costs add approximately AUD $24,500 per year (Department of Home Affairs minimum for student visa). Total budget for the full 3-year course typically lands between ₹1.05 crore and ₹1.65 crore all-in, before scholarships. WhatsApp us for the latest 2026 fee structure for your shortlisted universities.
Yes — but it requires the right pathway. Most Australian universities prefer Biology or Chemistry at 12th, but several accept Commerce, Humanities, and Computer Science students through:
(1) Foundation/Pathway programs (8–12 months bridging course before BN), (2) Diploma of Nursing entry pathways, (3) Direct entry at universities like Charles Sturt, Southern Cross, UniSC, Federation, and Australian Catholic University which assess applications more flexibly, (4) Pre-bachelor science modules.
G2H has personally placed 60+ Commerce and Humanities students into Bachelor of Nursing programs over the past 3 years. Final eligibility is conditional and depends on your overall academic profile, IELTS/PTE scores, GTE statement and university policy. WhatsApp Abin's team for a personal eligibility check.
For university admission: typically IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band, or PTE 58 overall.
For final AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse (after graduation): IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in each band (the NMBA English Language Skills standard), or PTE 65 in each band, or OET Grade B in all four sub-tests. You don't need this score on day one — most students achieve it during the course or right after.
G2H runs IELTS and PTE coaching at our G2H English Academy with personalised mock tests. We also supply discounted PTE Academic vouchers.
For most Indian and GCC students, Australia offers the strongest overall package for nursing:
(1) Direct PR pathway — Registered Nurses are on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), enabling Subclass 189/190/491 visa applications without job offers in many cases. UK and Canada have far longer pathways. (2) Highest paid placements — students can work as AIN (Assistant in Nursing) earning AUD $28–$35/hour during studies, plus the new Commonwealth Prac Payments. (3) 48 hours/fortnight work rights — the highest among major destinations. (4) 3-year degree — same as UK, shorter than 4-year USA programs. (5) Regional incentives — extra PR points and additional post-study work years.
USA offers higher salaries but stricter visa pathways and no PR after study. UK is cheaper but limited PR routes. Canada has slow nursing licensure for Indian-trained nurses.
Yes — nursing students in Australia have excellent paid work options during studies:
(1) Assistant in Nursing (AIN) / Personal Care Assistant (PCA) — most students start these roles by Year 2 in aged care, hospitals, and disability support. Pay: AUD $28–$35/hour. (2) Clinical Placements — 800–1,000 placement hours are part of the course. From 2025, the Commonwealth Prac Payments scheme provides paid clinical placements (AUD $319.50/week for eligible students). (3) Casual healthcare work — agency shifts, NDIS support work.
Combined with the 48-hour-per-fortnight student visa work limit, most G2H students earn AUD $1,800–$2,800/month while studying — covering rent and most living expenses.
Registered Nurses (ANZSCO 254111) are on Australia's Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) — meaning direct PR is possible after graduation. The standard pathway:
(1) Complete Bachelor of Nursing (3 years), (2) Apply for AHPRA registration as Registered Nurse, (3) Apply for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) — 2 years post-study work, +1–2 years for regional graduates, (4) Get skills assessed by ANMAC, (5) Apply for PR via Skilled Independent (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190), or Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491). Many students get state nominations within 6–12 months of graduating.
This is general information, not migration advice. We coordinate with registered MARA agents for visa cases.
"Best" depends on your priorities:
Best for prestige + research: University of Sydney, Monash, Melbourne (Top 50 globally). Best for employability + metro lifestyle: QUT Brisbane, Deakin Melbourne, ACU. Best for affordability + PR pathway: Charles Sturt (NSW regional), Federation (Victoria regional), Southern Cross, UniSC Sunshine Coast. Best for non-science/Commerce students: Charles Sturt, ACU, Southern Cross, UniSC.
G2H's most-recommended combination for Kerala/GCC students with budget consciousness + PR goals is Charles Sturt University, Federation University, or UniSC — all under AUD $34,000/year, regional location bonuses, and strong nursing employment outcomes.
The G2H Exclusive Scholarship is a personal cash award given by Abin Mathew Varghese — Founder and Director of Guide to Heights — that stacks on top of any university scholarship. For Bachelor of Nursing in Australia, two awards apply:
QUT Australia (any course including BN): ₹30,000 for 85%+ (1 seat); ₹20,000 for 75%+ (1 seat). Charles Sturt University (any bachelor's including BN): ₹25,000 for 85%+ (1 seat); ₹20,000 for 75%+ (1 seat).
Eligibility: meeting the mark threshold from your previous degree, valid IELTS/PTE meeting university requirements, completing your full application and enrolment through G2H, receiving a university offer, passing a financial need assessment, and confirmed enrolment. Final selection is personally made by Abin after all documents are reviewed. Book a free consultation to confirm your eligibility.
After graduating with Bachelor of Nursing from an Australian university, you can apply for the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, giving you:
(1) 2 years post-study work in metropolitan areas (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth metro). (2) +1 additional year if you studied at a regional university (Charles Sturt, Federation, Southern Cross, UniSC etc.) — total 3 years. (3) +2 additional years if you continue living and working in regional Australia after graduation — total up to 4 years.
During this time, you typically apply for permanent residency. Most G2H nursing students transition to PR within 12–24 months of graduating, given Registered Nurse is on MLTSSL.
Indicative annual salaries for Registered Nurses in Australia (2026):
Graduate RN (Year 1): AUD $70,000–$80,000. Mid-career (3–7 years): AUD $85,000–$100,000. Senior RN / Clinical Nurse Specialist: AUD $100,000–$130,000. Nurse Practitioner / Specialist roles: AUD $130,000–$160,000+.
Public sector roles typically pay according to state award rates with strong shift loadings (nights, weekends and public holidays add 15–50%). Private hospitals, agency nursing and remote/regional areas often pay above award rates.
Standard application documents include: 10th and 12th mark sheets, IELTS/PTE/OET score report, passport copy, statement of purpose (SOP), GTE statement (Genuine Temporary Entrant), CV/resume, character references, and any prior work experience certificates. For visa lodgement: financial documents (bank statements, education loan letter, sponsor income proof), OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover), CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment), and biometrics.
