Evidence Levels — What They Mean & Why They Matter
What is the Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF)?
Australia's Department of Home Affairs uses the Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) to decide how much documentation each student visa applicant needs to provide. It assigns an Evidence Level (1, 2, or 3) to both your country and your university. The combination of the two determines your document requirements. From March 2024, the old "GTE" (Genuine Temporary Entrant) requirement was replaced by the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
🏛️ University Assessment Levels
Australia's Elite Research Universities
The Go8 are Australia's 8 most prestigious, research-intensive universities. They have the lowest visa risk profile historically and receive the most streamlined processing. Students from Level 1 and Level 2 countries do not need to provide financial or English evidence.
Universities: Melbourne, UNSW, Sydney, ANU, Monash, UQ, UWA, Adelaide University
Established, Strong Universities
Level 1 universities have good visa compliance records and low rates of visa problems. Same streamlined treatment as Group 8 — students from Level 1 and Level 2 countries do not need financial or English evidence.
Examples: UTS, Deakin, Curtin, Griffith, Macquarie, QUT, ACU, Notre Dame, Swinburne, Flinders, and 16+ others
Moderate Compliance Record
Level 2 universities have moderate visa compliance data. All students — regardless of country level — must provide financial evidence and English language results when applying to these universities.
Examples: JCU, Tasmania, CDU, Charles Sturt, Murdoch, UNE, Federation, USQ, Torrens
Highest Provider Scrutiny
TAFEs, VET providers, and most private colleges typically operate at the highest evidence level. Full documentation is required from all students regardless of country level. Very few universities are at Level 3 in 2026.
Examples: TAFE NSW, TAFE QLD, most independent private colleges and English-language providers
🌏 Country Evidence Levels
Your country's evidence level is calculated by the Department of Home Affairs based on visa refusal rates, fraud rates, visa cancellations, unlawful non-citizen rates, and protection visa applications from that country. It is reviewed and updated periodically.

Only students from Level 1 or Level 2 countries applying to Group 8 or Level 1 universities get the reduced document requirement. If either your country OR your university is Level 2/3, all documents including financial capacity and English language are required.
