Study Education in Australia
Become an internationally accredited teacher in Australia — one of the world's most respected school systems with a critical 30,000+ teacher shortage by 2030, AITSL accreditation, and a direct PR pathway through the MLTSSL for primary, secondary, early childhood, and special needs teachers.
Quick Pathway Facts
Course Overview
Why Study Education in Australia?
An Australian teaching qualification is one of the most globally portable, professionally respected, and PR-friendly credentials a student from Kerala or the GCC can earn. All accredited Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching programs are approved by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and lead directly to teacher registration with the relevant state authority — VIT in Victoria, NESA in NSW, QCT in Queensland, TRBSA in South Australia, and equivalents in WA, Tasmania, NT, and the ACT.
Australia is currently facing one of the worst teacher shortages in its history, with 30,000+ teacher vacancies projected nationally by 2030. Primary, secondary, early childhood, and special needs teachers are all on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) — meaning international graduates have a direct route from study visa to permanent residency, often within 24 months of graduating.
Two Clear Pathways
Bachelor of Education (4 yrs) for Year 12 entrants · Master of Teaching (1.5–2 yrs) for graduates of any discipline
AITSL Accredited

Choose Your Pathway
Bachelor of Education vs Master of Teaching
Australia offers two main routes to becoming a registered teacher — and the right one depends on whether you're applying straight after Year 12 or after a bachelor's degree. G2H matches your profile to the pathway that gets you to AITSL accreditation fastest, with the strongest PR outcomes.
Bachelor of Education (BEd / BTeach)
4 Years · Full-Time · AUD $28,000 – $42,000 / year
The direct-entry undergraduate pathway for students applying to Australia straight after Year 12. The Bachelor of Education leads directly to AITSL-accredited teacher registration upon graduation, with built-in classroom placement experience from Year 2.
- Specialise in Primary, Secondary (with teaching method), or Early Childhood from Year 1
- Combined honours options: BEd + Bachelor of Arts / Science / Disability Studies
- 60–80 days of supervised classroom placements across the 4 years
- AITSL accreditation upon graduation — eligible for VIT, NESA, QCT registration
- Some universities offer paid Year 4 internships (e.g. WSU's Quality Teaching Programme)
Master of Teaching (MTeach)
1.5 – 2 Years · Full-Time · AUD $32,000 – $52,000 / year
The most popular pathway for international students from Kerala and the GCC who already hold a bachelor's degree. The Master of Teaching is specifically designed for career-changers and graduates of any discipline — from Commerce to Engineering — who want to become accredited teachers in Australia.
- Master of Teaching (Primary) accepts any undergraduate degree
- Master of Teaching (Secondary) requires a major or sub-major in your teaching subject (Maths, English, Science, History, IT)
- Faster route: 1.5–2 years vs 4 years for Bachelor
- Same AITSL accreditation outcome as the BEd
- Eligible for full Subclass 485 post-study work visa (2–4 years)

Permanent Residency Pathway
How to Get PR in Australia as a Teacher
Teaching is one of Australia's most accessible PR pathways. Primary School Teachers (ANZSCO 241213), Secondary School Teachers (241411), Early Childhood (Pre-Primary School) Teachers (241111), and Special Needs Teachers (241511) are all on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). After your AITSL-accredited Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching, the route to PR typically takes 18–30 months.
Standard 485 Temporary Graduate Visa for BEd / MTeach graduates from metro university campuses. Two full years of unrestricted work rights — usually enough to gain Australian teaching experience and lodge a 189 / 190 visa.
Additional 1-year extension on the 485 visa for graduates of designated regional cities — extending your runway to skilled migration significantly.
Maximum extension of up to 2 additional years for true regional study locations. Combined with the 491 regional PR visa, this is the strongest pathway from student visa to permanent residency for teachers.

Subclass 190
State Nominated — extra 5 points. Teaching is on virtually every state's priority occupation list, with active nominations. -
Subclass 491 → 191
Regional — extra 15 points, fastest pathway. After 3 years working in regional Australia, transition to 191 PR.
Accreditation & Registration
Accreditation, Registration & Optional Certifications
To teach in any Australian school, you must complete an AITSL-accredited initial teacher education program AND register with the relevant state teaching authority. Beyond mandatory accreditation, several optional certifications significantly boost employability and salary — especially for international students aiming at competitive metro school positions.
AITSL Accreditation
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is the national body that accredits initial teacher education programs against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Every accredited Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching automatically meets this standard. Without AITSL accreditation, you cannot register or teach in any Australian school.
State Teacher Registration
Each Australian state and territory has its own teacher registration authority — VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching), NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority), QCT (Queensland College of Teachers), TRBSA (South Australia), TRBWA (Western Australia), TRB (Tasmania), TQI (ACT), TRBNT (Northern Territory). After your accredited degree, you apply to the registration body in your target state.
AITSL Skills Assessment
For migration purposes, you need an AITSL Skills Assessment as the gateway to applying for a Subclass 189, 190, or 491 visa. AITSL assesses your qualification against the Australian Professional Standards plus your English language proficiency. G2H supports the full skills assessment lodgement process.
Working with Children Check (WWCC)
State-issued background check required before any school placement. Free for student volunteers in most states. Stays valid for 5 years. G2H walks you through state-by-state WWCC application.
TESOL / TESL Certification
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages — significantly boosts employability for ESL/EAL/D teaching roles in Australia, plus opens up international teaching contracts (Middle East, Asia). Many universities embed TESOL into the Master of Teaching as an elective.
Highly Accomplished / Lead Teacher (HALT)
AITSL's national career certification awarded after 5+ years of teaching. HALT-certified teachers are paid AUD $10,000 – $25,000 above standard award rates. Recognised across all states. Strongly valued in independent school recruitment.
State-specific registration and continuing professional development (CPD) requirements apply throughout your career. G2H supports the full registration pathway through our Melbourne office, including post-graduation document preparation.

Education in Australia FAQs
Your Most Asked Questions, Answered
Everything Kerala and GCC families ask us about studying Education or Master of Teaching in Australia — answered honestly by Abin and the G2H team.
Yes — the Master of Teaching (MTeach) is specifically designed for graduates from any bachelor's discipline who want to become accredited teachers in Australia. Master of Teaching (Primary) accepts any undergraduate degree (Commerce, Engineering, Arts, Science, IT, Hospitality — anything). Master of Teaching (Secondary) requires you to have studied your teaching specialisation as a major or sub-major in your bachelor's (e.g., Mathematics, English, Science, History, IT, Economics).
G2H has placed dozens of Commerce, BBA, BCA, B.Tech, and Arts graduates into Master of Teaching programmes across 25+ Australian universities. WhatsApp us with your bachelor's transcript — we'll match you to the right Master of Teaching pathway.
Bachelor of Education (4-year) tuition ranges from AUD $28,000 to $42,000 per year. Master of Teaching (1.5-2 year) ranges from AUD $32,000 to $52,000 per year. Living costs add approximately AUD $29,710 per year (Department of Home Affairs minimum for student visa).
Total all-in budget: Bachelor of Education ₹85 lakh – ₹1.4 crore; Master of Teaching ₹55 lakh – ₹95 lakh. ⭐ G2H exclusive cash scholarship of up to ₹25,000 for Charles Sturt University applicants reduces this further. WhatsApp us for the latest 2026 fee structure for your shortlisted universities.
AITSL sets the highest English requirement of any Australian profession: IELTS 7.5 overall, with 8.0 in Speaking and Listening, and 7.0 in Reading and Writing. PTE 79 overall (with 65+ in each communicative skill) is accepted by most universities. This standard applies to both course admission and final teacher registration.
For some applicants, universities may grant a Conditional Offer at slightly lower English (e.g. IELTS 6.5) and require you to meet the AITSL standard before registration. G2H English Academy provides specialised AITSL-targeted IELTS coaching — the 8.0 in Speaking and Listening is the single biggest hurdle for international applicants, and we have a proven track record of getting students there.
Yes. Primary School Teachers (ANZSCO 241213), Secondary School Teachers (241411), Early Childhood (Pre-Primary) Teachers (241111), and Special Needs Teachers (241511) are all on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
This means direct PR pathways via Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), Subclass 190 (State Nominated), and Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional). Several Australian states (Victoria, NSW, WA, NT) actively prioritise teacher state nominations due to the severity of the workforce shortage. This is general information, not migration advice — G2H coordinates with registered MARA agents for visa lodgement.
Best depends on priorities:
For prestige + global ranking: University of Melbourne (World #14 for education), University of Sydney, Monash, UNSW (all Group of Eight). For value-for-money + employability: Deakin (G2H founder's alma mater), ACU (Australia's largest teacher producer), RMIT, Western Sydney. For affordability + regional PR pathway: Charles Sturt (G2H scholarship eligible), Federation, Newcastle, La Trobe Bendigo.
G2H's most-recommended combination for Kerala/GCC students with budget consciousness + PR goals is Charles Sturt University, Federation University, or University of Newcastle — all under AUD $34,000/year, regional location bonuses, and strong teacher employment outcomes. Compare every accredited Australian education course on CourseFind.
Currently the highest teacher demand is in regional Victoria, NSW, Queensland, and the Northern Territory. Many states offer significant signing bonuses and incentives:
Victoria: Targeted Teaching Scholarships of up to AUD $25,000 for graduates accepting hard-to-staff schools. NSW: Rural Teacher Incentive scheme — up to AUD $30,000 in extra payments. Queensland: Beyond the Range Allowance for remote schools. Northern Territory: Up to AUD $50,000+ in combined location, retention and accommodation allowances for teachers in very remote schools. Regional teaching is also the fastest PR pathway via Subclass 491.
Yes. International students on a Subclass 500 visa can work 48 hours per fortnight during semester and unlimited during semester breaks. Most Master of Teaching students work as casual relief teachers, education support workers, learning support assistants, or private tutors — earning AUD $35–$60 per hour.
Once you've completed your first supervised placement (usually 6–9 months in), you become eligible for "permission to teach" relief work in many states. Many G2H students earn AUD $1,800–$3,000 per month while studying — covering rent and most living expenses. Your placement schools often hire you as graduate teachers immediately after registration.
The Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa gives you 2 years post-study work in metro cities, 3 years for graduates of Category 2 regional cities (Adelaide, Newcastle, Wollongong, Hobart, Canberra, Gold Coast), and up to 4 years for true regional study locations like Bathurst, Wagga, Bendigo, or Townsville.
Combined with the 491 regional PR visa, this is the strongest PR runway available to international Education students. Most G2H Master of Teaching graduates transition to PR within 18-30 months of graduating.
No prior teaching experience is required for either Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching admission in Australia. However, some universities (e.g., University of Melbourne, UNSW Sydney, University of Sydney) ask for a Statement of Suitability and a CASPer-style situational judgment test for Master of Teaching admissions.
The Statement of Suitability asks you to describe your motivation for teaching, any informal experience working with children or youth (tutoring, volunteering, coaching, mentoring), and your understanding of the teaching profession. G2H prepares you for both the Statement and the CASPer test as part of our application support.
Indicative annual salaries for Australian teachers in 2026:

Highly Accomplished / Lead Teacher: AUD $110,000-$130,000. Heads of Department / Subject Lead: AUD $115,000-$135,000. Deputy Principals: AUD $135,000-$160,000. Principals: AUD $160,000-$220,000+.
Public sector pay is on award rates with annual increments. Regional and remote teachers receive additional location loadings of AUD $5,000–$50,000+ per year. Private and Catholic school teachers can earn 5-15% above award rates.
The AITSL Skills Assessment is a mandatory step for any teacher applying for Australian Permanent Residency. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) assesses your qualification, English language proficiency, and (if applicable) your teaching experience against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
You apply for an AITSL Skills Assessment after completing your accredited degree and meeting the IELTS 7.5 / 8.0 standard. A successful Skills Assessment is the gateway to applying for Subclass 189, 190, or 491 visas. G2H supports the full Skills Assessment lodgement through our Melbourne office.
Yes. All AITSL-accredited Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching programs build in 60–80 days of supervised professional teaching placements across the course. These placements are arranged by the university, count as part of your study load (not separate work), and are a critical step to teacher registration.
Placements are unpaid in most universities — but they are the single best networking opportunity, with many graduates being offered graduate teacher positions at the same schools where they did their final placements.
Yes. G2H provides full post-graduation support including:
(1) State Teacher Registration document preparation (VIT in Victoria, NESA in NSW, QCT in Queensland). (2) AITSL Skills Assessment lodgement guidance for migration.
