The GS Requirement โ What It Is and What You Must Prove
The GS requirement replaced the old GTE. It confirms that your primary purpose for coming to Australia is to study. It is more straightforward than GTE โ but requires concrete evidence, not generic statements. Four questions are answered directly in ImmiAccount (max 150 words each).
Primary Intention Must Be Study
Your visa application must clearly show that your main reason to enter Australia is to complete your enrolled course. Work, migration, or permanent stay at time of application are secondary considerations.
Demonstrate Course & Provider Research
Show a clear understanding of your course structure, costs, duration, AQF level, and provider reputation. Vague answers are flagged. Specific research evidence โ provider website, course outline, career outcomes โ is expected.
Career Benefit Must Be Clearly Explained
Explain how the Australian qualification improves your career prospects. Reference expected roles, salary improvements, and how the qualification is recognised internationally or in your home country.
Ties to Home Country Are Assessed
Family ties, employment history, financial connections, and community roles in India or GCC countries show you have genuine reasons to return after study. Strong ties positively support your GS case.
Answered Online โ Not a Separate Document
GS questions are completed inside ImmiAccount (max 150 words each). They are not a standalone uploaded document. Supporting evidence files must be attached to your application separately.
Parents' Intentions Also Considered
For students under 18, the Department also assesses the intentions of parents or legal guardians. Welfare arrangements must be in place for the full duration of stay or until the student turns 18.
๐ The 4 GS Questions You Answer in ImmiAccount
Max 150 words each. Be specific. Attach evidence for every answer. Our counsellors help you draft strong answers โ free.
- Q1Current CircumstancesYour family, community, employment, and financial ties to your home country. Kerala students: mention family property, current job, community roles. UAE/GCC residents: employment contract, business interests, dependants in India.
- Q2Why This Course & Provider in AustraliaWhy this specific course with this specific provider in Australia โ not a similar course in India or UAE. Show your research: course structure, fees, duration, AQF level, and career outcomes specific to Australian qualification.
- Q3Career & Future BenefitHow this qualification directly improves your career. Include expected job roles, salary range in Australia and back in India/GCC, PR prospects if relevant, and ANZSCO occupational codes if applying for skilled migration pathways.
- Q4Any Other Relevant InformationStudy gaps, course or provider changes, previous visa applications or refusals, family circumstances in Australia, or any special situations that explain your application timeline or decisions.

How Many Hours Can You Work on an Australia Student Visa?
Work rights depend on your course type and whether your course is currently in session. Always check VEVO for your specific conditions. Breaking your work limit is a visa condition breach and can lead to cancellation.
No Work Permitted
Student visa holders and their family members cannot work in Australia at all before the student starts their course. Work rights begin only from the first day of study.
Per Fortnight โ All Work Types
Most student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight (2 weeks) while their course is in session. Includes casual, part-time, and self-employment.
Unlimited Hours
When your course is not in session (official holiday periods), student visa holders can work unlimited hours. Check your timetable and keep records in case of a visa compliance check.
No Work Limit โ You & Family
Students studying a Masters by Research or Doctoral degree and their family members have no work limit at any time โ even while the course is running.
Masters by Coursework: family members also unlimited, but the student is still 48 hrs/fortnight.
How Much Money Do You Need for the Australia Student Visa?
The Department of Home Affairs sets minimum living cost figures. You must demonstrate genuine access to funds โ not just a balance. A single-day bank balance certificate alone is not sufficient.
OSHC โ Overseas Student Health Cover
OSHC is mandatory for the entire visa duration. You cannot lodge a visa application without OSHC details. Your cover must start from your arrival day in Australia โ not your course start date. Do not enter Australia before OSHC begins or you may be refused entry.
Which OSHC Provider Is Right for You?
There are 5 approved OSHC providers in Australia. Coverage, hospital networks, pharmacy limits, waiting periods, and pricing all vary. Guide to Heights compares all 5 and helps you buy at the real market price โ saving up to $300 vs university price. Our OSHC guidance is completely free.
Mandatory โ No ExceptionsCover starts from arrival day, not course day. Missing OSHC = visa refused. Exceptions only for Norwegian, Swedish & Belgian students.
What Happens After You Graduate? Your PR Pathway.
Australia student visa is not just about studying โ it's a stepping stone to permanent residency. With the right course and planning, you can build a strong PR pathway from your first day of study.
๐ Check Your PR Points Score
Study in Australia โ Subclass 500 Student Visa
Complete your CRICOS-registered qualification (2โ4 years for most degrees). Choose a course in a skilled occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) for the strongest PR pathway. During study, aim for IELTS 8.0+ or PTE 79+ for 20 additional points, and consider NAATI CCL for 5 bonus points.
Apply for Subclass 485 โ Temporary Graduate Visa
After completing your Australian degree, apply for the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa โ. This provides 2โ5 years of post-study work rights depending on your course and location. Regional graduates and some occupations get longer stay periods. Guide to Heights provides free 485 visa guidance.
Gain Work Experience & Improve Your Points
During your 485 visa, accumulate work experience in your occupation (adds 5โ10 points), maintain or improve English scores, complete a Professional Year if in IT, Accounting, or Engineering (5 bonus points), and build a credentialled resume. Use Guide to Heights' free PR points calculator โ to track your score.
Lodge EOI โ Skilled Migration (189, 190 or 491)
Lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect. Most competitive rounds for Subclass 189 require 85โ100+ points. Subclass 190 (state-nominated) adds 5 points. Subclass 491 (regional) adds 15 points โ more accessible. Our QEAC team provides free EOI strategy and occupation assessment guidance.
Permanent Resident โ Subclass 189, 190 or 191
Subclass 189 and 190 grant immediate permanent residency. Subclass 491 converts to permanent PR via Subclass 191 after 3 years of living and working in a regional area. Once you have PR, you can apply for Australian citizenship after 4 years of permanent residence (1 year as a permanent resident continuously).
How to Apply for Your Australia Student Visa
