Quick answer

For most new UK Student visa applicants in 2026, you need to show:

  • Unpaid first-year tuition fees (as shown on your CAS) +
  • Maintenance funds: £1,529/month in London or £1,171/month outside London, for up to 9 months
  • Funds held for 28 consecutive days, with evidence dated within 31 days of your application
  • India is not on the UK's differential evidence list, so most Indian applicants should keep full financial evidence ready

This is general information, not a personalised visa calculation. Always verify current figures on GOV.UK before applying.

If you are planning to study in the UK for the September 2026 or January 2027 intake, understanding the UK student visa financial requirements 2026 is one of the most important parts of your visa preparation. For most new Student visa applicants, you need to show enough money for your unpaid first-year course fees plus the required living costs — and getting this calculation wrong is one of the most common reasons applications run into trouble.

This guide breaks the requirement down into 7 essential rules, using the official 2026 figures, so you know exactly what to check before you submit your application.

Important: UK immigration requirements can change. Please verify the latest requirement on GOV.UK before submitting your visa application. Meeting the financial requirement does not guarantee that a Student visa application will be approved.
1

Know the total-funds formula

The basic calculation behind the UK student visa financial requirement is simple to state, even though the numbers can get detailed:

Total funds required=
Unpaid first-year tuition fees (from CAS)+
Required maintenance funds

For most students applying from outside the UK, the course-fee part is based on tuition fees for one academic year, up to 9 months, as stated on your CAS. If you have already paid part of your tuition fee, that payment can reduce the amount you need to show — where the payment is properly confirmed by your education provider on the CAS or by an acceptable receipt.

Remember: This visa financial requirement is not the same as your entire study-abroad budget. You may have additional costs such as visa fees, the healthcare surcharge, travel, accommodation deposits and personal expenses.
2

Use the correct maintenance rate — London vs outside London

For 2026, the official maintenance requirement is £1,529 per month in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for a maximum of 9 months.

Study locationMonthly amountMaximum periodMaximum total
London£1,5299 months£13,761
Outside London£1,1719 months£10,539

The UK rules define London as the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. If the relevant course period covers only part of a month, the Immigration Rules provide for that period to be rounded up to the next full month.

What does this mean for Kerala students?

A student from Kochi, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode or anywhere else in Kerala does not use a different rate because they are applying from Kerala. The rate depends on where you will study in the UK, not where you apply from. A student applying from Kerala for a course in Manchester uses the outside-London rate; a student applying for a course in London uses the London rate.

3

Follow the 28-day bank balance rule

The required funds normally need to be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the final date of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days of the visa application date.

This does not mean depositing the required amount shortly before your visa appointment. Your financial evidence needs to demonstrate that the required level of funds was maintained for the full 28-day period, and the evidence itself must generally be dated no more than 31 days before the date of application. It should show the account holder's name, the bank or building society name and the amount of money available.

Fictional example only, not official advice: Suppose a student plans to apply on 21 September 2026. Their financial evidence should show the required balance maintained for 28 consecutive days, ending within the 31-day window before that date. If the balance dipped below the required amount during those 28 days, simply topping it up right before applying does not fix the issue. Always confirm exact dates against current GOV.UK rules.
4

Use only accepted financial evidence

UKVI accepts several forms of financial evidence — but each type has its own conditions.

Your own savings

Acceptable if held in an account that meets UKVI requirements, allows immediate access to the funds, and was acquired legally.

Your parent's money

Parents can provide financial support where the rules allow it. This normally needs evidence of the relationship and written consent confirming you can use the money for your studies — especially relevant for Indian students whose costs are funded by parents.

Student loans

A qualifying student loan can be used, but the evidence must contain specific details: the loan amount, confirmation it is a student loan, that it is for the applicant, and when the funds become available or are paid to the education provider. A loan should not be assumed acceptable simply because it is called an "education loan."

Official financial sponsorship

Qualifying sponsorship from bodies such as the UK government, a national government, the British Council, an eligible university or an international organisation. If not already recorded on the CAS, confirmation from the sponsor may be required.

Fixed deposits: A fixed deposit or certificate of deposit is not automatically acceptable just because it's a bank product — UKVI still requires the funds and account to meet the applicable rules, including access to the money. Please verify the latest requirement on GOV.UK before applying.
5

Check your CAS before you calculate

CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies — the reference issued by your licensed UK education provider for your Student visa application. It contains your course and tuition-fee details, including any payments already made.

If your university has recorded a tuition payment on your CAS, calculate the remaining tuition amount rather than adding the full original fee again. Checking your CAS carefully before calculating your bank balance avoids one of the most common and easily preventable errors in this process.

6

Avoid the common mistakes

Most financial-document problems can be avoided by checking the balance, dates, CAS and evidence format before you submit.

  • Balance dipping below the required amount during the 28-day period — even a temporary shortfall can create a problem.
  • Using an outdated bank statement that falls outside the required date limits.
  • Forgetting unpaid tuition fees and calculating maintenance funds alone.
  • Assuming an education loan is automatically acceptable without checking it meets official requirements.
  • Not checking the CAS for tuition payments already recorded.
  • Using cryptocurrency, stocks or an unsuitable account — GOV.UK guidance specifically excludes several asset types, including cryptocurrency, stocks and shares, and pensions.
  • Forgetting parent-consent evidence when relying on a parent's account.
  • Relying on old social-media advice or unofficial blogs instead of checking GOV.UK directly before applying.
7

Always verify on GOV.UK before you apply

UK immigration requirements change, sometimes with little notice. Maintenance amounts, accepted document lists and evidence rules should always be checked against the current GOV.UK Student visa: money guidance immediately before you submit your application — not just when you first start researching.

Why this matters: Meeting the financial requirement is necessary but does not, on its own, guarantee that your Student visa application will be approved. Your application is assessed as a whole.

Hypothetical example

Worked example for an Indian student

The following uses the official 2026 maintenance figures for illustration only. It is not a personalised visa calculation — your own figure depends on your CAS, payments already recognised by your provider, and your study location.

Imagine a student from Kerala applying for a one-year Master's course outside London:

Tuition fee for the academic year£18,000
Tuition already paid & confirmed by university£4,000
Outstanding tuition£14,000
Maintenance (£1,171 × 9 months)£10,539
Illustrative total required£24,539

For a London course, the maintenance component would instead be £1,529 × 9 = £13,761, changed accordingly in the total.

Questions students ask us

Frequently asked questions

How much bank balance is required for a UK student visa in 2026?

For most new Student visa applicants, the required amount is unpaid first-year tuition fees plus maintenance funds. Maintenance is currently £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to 9 months.

Is tuition fee included in the UK student visa financial requirement?

Yes. Most applicants need to demonstrate enough money for outstanding course fees for the relevant academic year, in addition to maintenance funds. Tuition payments already recognised by the university can reduce the amount you need to show.

Can parents sponsor a student's UK visa funds?

Yes, subject to UKVI requirements. You normally need evidence of the relationship with the parent or legal guardian and written consent to use the funds.

How long must the money remain in the bank account?

Normally 28 consecutive days, with the final date of that period falling within 31 days before the visa application date.

Do students from India need to submit bank statements?

India is not currently on the UK's differential evidence list. Indian applicants should prepare the required financial evidence and be ready to provide it, as UKVI can also request it during the application process.
